People who are recovered (like myself after 8 yrs of PSSD) will tell you no. No one can know whether any case is permanent or not, even if it has gone on for many years. Some will simply decide that this is sufficient evidence to believe it is permanent, and that every recovery story never really had PSSD, or that every recovery was an arbitrarily defined "mild" case. This attitude fills their mind with hopelessness that prevents them from taking action on their health. Others will remain optimistic, attributed to the hope presented by recovery stories, or at the very least remaining rational and open to the possibility that they recover, since this possibility has not been ruled out. These optimists are typically the ones who recover, since recovery usually takes hard work and persistence on one's own health.

It seems PSSD is a serious neurophysiological syndrome, which could have a many degrees of severity and symptoms. Like in the most syndromes affecting emotions ( PSSD symptoms are mix of psychiatric & neurological ) in a plastic system, recovering seems as a complex interplay between severity, pre-PSSD mental diseases, systemic diseases, lifestyle, personality, economic status, social support and a luck. Psychological techniques are just one of the many factors. Forcing the mindset and the same methods without seeing any improvements may quickly led to despair and drastic resolution while it should motive to change approach and think different about what could be done. Not always possible to find a way of it.

What we see in the most substance / intervention induced syndromes like: emotionally blunting and sexually compromising substance inducing persistent emotional blunting and sexual dysfunction, a hallucinogen inducing persistent visual changes ( HPPD ),a neuroleptic inducing tardive akathisia or tardive dyskinesia, electroconvulsive therapy inducing spontaneous seizures decades after intervention is that any change induced by foreign substance or intervention may be long-lasting. This is what basic research on neuroplasticity tells that the changes induced outside original homeostasis tends to be persistent. It's only psychiatry saying, a one could throw everything on the brain and that will not have consequences.
