EUROPEAN PUBLIC HEALTH HEARING - Lets demand one

The European Medicines agency occasionally holds public health hearings into conditions caused by medicines that have not been warned. The aim of the the hearings is to allow European Citizens to have their voices heard on the effects of medications.

Last year a hearing was hosted by June Raine to discuss the side effects of an epileptic drug on pregnancies. Those affected were asked to tell their stories and the hearing was attended by sufferers, healthcare professionals, regulatory officials and the media. It was broadcast live. Another took place this year in June and you can watch on the public hearing website.

I have contacted someone at the MHRA to find out more about how we can organise a public health hearing into PSSD as I think it could be a massive step in solving this, there really is no better platform for raising awareness of the issue. It will be difficult to get one arranged but its worth raising the issue and building pressure over the next year or so. There were some studies backing up the epilepsy drug harming the development of pregnancies and we are not there yet. But still worth I go. I am also trying to involve my local member of parliament in the process which should further raise awareness of the problem.
