Antibiotics Usage Poll

Unread post by Enigmatic »

There has scattered talk here about the effect of antibiotics on symptoms. Most of the time only people who have negative reactions post although there have been some positive reactions as well. I am hoping that through this poll we can get a better idea about their risk/reward potential. It would also be helpful if you posted the type of antibiotic you took and the details of the effects if any.

Penicyline class ( most of them ) induces EAAT2 transporter gene by increasing it's mRNA transcription epigenetically. Hence increases glutamate clearance in a synaptic cleft to astrocytes within hours, thus lowering glutaminergic ( excitatory ) transsimision efficiency. Increased protein level last for a few days. Glutamate system is highly regulated so most people do not notice any change, but in some cases that's why this class of antibiotics cause psychosis and counteract seizures. May potentiate emotional blunting and anesthesia. More brain-permeable ( ampicillin ) higher the effect

Clarithromycin - a macrolide. GABA antagonist - causes weird intoxication and anxiety.

The rest of antibiotics induce psychosomatic effects mainly by affecting gut-brain axis and shifting the balance of microbiota. Effects are mostly temporary, highly depend on individual person and antibiotic spectrum. Those with IBS may notice temporary lifting of depressive symptoms.
